Potential Role of NEU1 in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Study Based on Comprehensive Bioinformatical Analysis

Abstract: Background: Aberrant expression of NEU1 has been identified in many malignancies. Nevertheless, the clinical significance of NEU1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been fully elucidated. Methods: In our study, multiple databases, including ONCOMINE, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE), Human Protein Atlas (HPA), Kaplan-Meier (KM) plotter, MethSurv, Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis… Show more

“…First of all, the differential expression of ARIDs between HCC and normal tissues was analyzed using the ONCOMINE ( https://www.oncomine.org ) database [ 13 ]. We followed the methods of Wu et al with some modifications [ 14 ]. Screening criteria were as follows: cancer type = liver cancer; gene = ARID family members; data type = mRNA; analysis type = cancer versus normal analysis; threshold values: p value < 0.05, fold change > 1.5, and gene rank = top 10%.…”

“…This increase is mediated through the NF-κB pathway, which also stimulates the downstream signaling pathways. The investigators also highlight the potential use of Neu1 as a therapeutic target (Wu et al, 2021). Also, Neu1 can promote metastasis of pancreatic cancer.…”

“…Evidence suggests that the upregulation of NEU1 in cancers may increase the utilization of sialic acid, thus contributing to the maintenance of cell sialylation. NEU1 is highly expressed in various cancers, such as liver cancer [ 102 ], pancreatic cancer [ 103 ], ovarian cancer [ 104 ], and melanoma [ 105 ]. However, NEU1 is reported to be expressed at low levels in certain stages of tumors and has been found to remove cytosolic sialic acid modifications and inhibit tumor progression [ 10 , 106 ].…”
