Potential role for microRNA-16 (miR-16) and microRNA-93 (miR-93) in diagnosis and prediction of disease progression in mycosis fungoides in Egyptian patients

Abstract: Mycosis Fungoides (MF) is the most common type of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. Early stage patients are treated with topical therapies and have normal life expectancy whereas patients with advanced disease encounter frequent relapses and have a five-year survival rate that does not exceed 15%. The aim of the present study was to characterize the expression of microRNA-16 (miR-16) and microRNA-93 (miR-93) in early and advanced cases of MF in relation to the clinicopathological parameters. Ten skin biopsies of ea… Show more

“…The tumor suppressor gene PTEN is a known target of the miR-93–5p and miR-181 families ( 61 , 62 ). However, contrary to the findings of previous studies, a recent study on miR-93 found that the expression of miR-93 was significantly downregulated in both early and advanced MF compared with normal and eczema cases ( 32 ). Therefore, further studies with larger cohorts of MF patients are needed to explore the role of miR-93 in the progression of MF.…”

“…Specifically, miR-93 not only plays a role in the pathogenesis of MF but can also be used as a specific biomarker for the diagnosis of MF. The significant downregulation of miR-93 can be used for the early diagnosis of early challenging cases ( 32 ).…”

“…Talaat et al The expression of Bcl-2 in MF, eczema and control groups was investigated. Accordingly, while an intense Bcl-2 expression was observed in the stage-independent MF group, only basal keratinocytes Bcl-2 staining was observed in eczema and control groups (21).…”

“…Aberrant miRNA levels are common in CTCL. Many investigations have validated miRNA classifiers that can discriminate CTCL from benign inflammation ( 117 ) and predict disease progression ( 118 , 119 ) and prognosis in patients with CTCL ( 120 , 121 ). Many studies have shown that miRNAs are involved in many signaling pathways that regulate the cell cycle ( 122 ) and apoptosis resistance, particularly the Notch, STAT, and ( 123 ) NF κ B pathogenic pathways.…”
