Potential of Snoezelen room multisensory stimulation to improve balance in individuals with dementia: a feasibility randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Although the null hypothesis was not rejected, further investigation of a potential to influence balance in individuals with dementia through Snoezelen room intervention in long-term care homes is warranted.

“…Of the single component interventions two focused on knowledge based interventions [26,33], five on the environment [27,29,30,38,46] two on physical activity or exercise [28,43], and two on sensory stimulation, one involving , olfactory stimulation with lavender oil [45], and the other multisensory stimulation through a Snoezelen room [36]. ProFANE classifications can be seen in Table 3 and further details of included studies (including the links between papers) in Table 4.…”

“…Just under half the studies specified within inclusion criteria that residents required a dementia diagnosis to participate (n ¼ 35, 48%). Whilst not specifying a dementia diagnosis, the requirement for participants to display 'cognitive difficulties' was specified by Klages, Zecevic, Organge, and Hobson (2011). In addition, Simard and Volicer (2010) reported most participants to have 'severe' Cognitive Performance Scale scores.…”

“…Physical health was measured by balance and joint movement range (Hagen et al, 2003), oxygen saturation, temperature and pulse (Koike et al, 2012) and balance tests (Klages et al, 2011). Overall functioning was assessed via use of the Multidimensional Observational Scale of Elderly Subjects by Orsulic-Jeras et al (2000).…”
