Potential of medicinal plants in management of diabetes: An updates

Abstract: Phytochemical means plant derived chemicals they are defined as bioactive nutrient present in plant in fruits, vegetables, grains, and other part of plants that may provide advantageous health benefits across basic nourishment. Medicinal plants are used in the treatment of various illness due to the presence of therapeutically important phytochemicals. Sometimes in patients with diabetes mellitus, the levels of antioxidant parameters are found to decrease, hence in many studies phytochemicals are suggested to … Show more

“…The antidiabetic activities of these medicinal plants and vitamins are attributed to the presence of coumarins, flavonoids, polyphenols, terpenoids, and other bioactive compounds which exert their effects through the reduction in blood glucose levels. The administration of medicinal plants and vitamins in proper dosages has been demonstrated to lower fasting blood sugar levels in people with diabetes, improve blood circulation and promote wound healing in people with diabetes, and ameliorate complications associated with diabetes [120,121]. Hence, great efforts should be made to increase awareness about the health benefits of medicinal plants and vitamins in the cost-effective prevention and treatment of DM patients; especially those in developing countries who cannot afford the high costs of modern medicine.…”

“…Bioavailability of phenolic compounds is limited due to their less water solubility and instability at low pH values (Malode et al, 2021 ). The bioavailability of polyphenols can be increased by using nanoparticles (Irshad et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, wherein beta cells in the pancreas are destroyed by the immune system, resulting in absolute insulin deficiency, while Type 2 diabetes results from insulin resistance and the progressive loss of insulin secretion. In contrast, gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy [5]. Type 2 DM is the most common health burden, particularly in the elderly population, affecting approximately 25% of people over the age of 65 years as of 2021, with the number of affected people expected to increase drastically over the next decades owing to increased life expectancy [6].…”
