Potential of Alternative Sorbents for Desulphurization: From Laboratory Tests to the Full-Scale Combustion Unit

Abstract: At present, natural limestone is used for the desulphurization of waste gases from the combustion of fossil fuels. However, it is important to save all primary resources, such as limestone, for the future. The researchers focused on finding alternative sorbents for the purpose of desulphurization in a dry additive method, which would become the alternative for natural limestone. This paper is primarily focused on desulphurization tests of selected substances. Tests were initially conducted on the laboratory sc… Show more

“…However, it has been known for long that many BA or FA constituents can influence this result [71,73,[95][96][97][98]. For example, various desulphurization additives are being tested and used -e.g., calcium carbonate, dolomite, lime, and sodium bicarbonate [75,[99][100][101][102][103][104][105][106], which can significantly increase measured LOI value in ash due to possible interferences. Incomplete thermal decomposition of additives based on carbonates are then typical source of increased LOI values due to CO 2 evolution [71,73,[95][96][97][98][99][100].…”

“…The CaO then reacts with the SO 2 and the CaSO 4 . The amount of the additives in the sludge lowers the lime stone consumption as the primary source (Szeliga 2008). The analysis of heavy metals and microelements in the combusted fuels (the energy coal, the coal sludge, the sewage sludge) were carried out in the laboratories of The Technical University of Ostrava.…”

“…The principle of the whole method of elimination of sulphur oxides (Szeliga et al, 2008) from combustion products is blasting ground sodium bicarbonate to the flue way before the two-stage electrostatic fly ash precipitator (the blasting location is shown in Fig. 1) with subsequent measurement of gaseous emissions and combustion product flow.…”
