Potential matching of carbon capture storage and utilization (CCSU) as enhanced oil recovery in perspective to Indian oil refineries

Abstract: Carbon capture storage and utilization is not a new technology, but its application to reduce CO2 emissions from the refinery sector is just now emerging as promising mitigation. This study will look closely at opportunities to match CO2 sources with potential sinks by matching carbon-capturing projects at Indian oil refineries with Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) operations at nearby oil fields in India. This study has identified four such pairings of source-sink matching along with the challenges the first of th… Show more

“…A recent example of commercial CCU with newer, more efficient amine based technologies is at Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited, where CO 2 captured from the coal fired boiler flue gas is used to produce sodium carbonate. 88 Integrated carbon capture and utilization demonstration units are appearing at various locations in the country, with India's energy sector companies taking a lead in adopting CCU technologies in partnership with global CCU technology providers. ONGC and IOCL have come together to capture CO 2 at the IOCL Koyali Refinery and to utilize it for EOR in the ONGC Gandhar fields.…”

“…Kamolov et al (2023) emphasise that despite significant advancements in post-combustion carbon capture (PCC), deployment at the necessary scale to meet global climate goals remains unachieved, highlighting inefficiencies and high operational costs as principal restraints (Kamolov, Turakulov, Rejabov, & Díaz-Sainz, 2023). Furthermore, Dalei and Joshi (2022) point out that the energy penalties associated with current CCSU technologies severely impede their widespread adoption, compounded by ongoing concerns regarding the long-term integrity and monitoring of stored CO2, which is crucial to prevent counterproductive leakage (Dalei & Joshi, 2022).…”

“…It explores into the integration of these materials into systems and processes that optimize carbon capture, storage, and conversion functionalities. By synthesizing current research, this article intends to provide a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies, identify gaps in existing research, and suggest directions for future investigations (Dalei & Joshi, 2022;Mualim et al, 2022).…”

“…Summarizing sources that are trustworthy, it can be argued that the number of EOR projects in the historical period has significantly decreased. The peak was in the eighties when there were about 700 of them (data from Shell) [165]. It seems that the most objective is the conservative assessment of global EOR projects (Figure 16).…”
