Potential impact of plans and policies based on the principles of conservation agriculture on the control of soil erosion in Brazil

Abstract: Land use and coverage surveys show that 30.5% of Brazil's territory was dedicated to the production of food, fibers, biofuels, and raw materials. This paper fills a gap and provides information to society and decision-makers about the effectiveness of the adoption of conservation agriculture (CA) principles with zero tillage (ZT/CA) and integrated crop-livestock-forest (iCLF-CA) systems as the central policies to mitigate soil erosion, the main agent of land degradation and productivity loss. The increase in C… Show more

“…While the ICLF benefits are reported in the scientific literature, this strategy has not been widely adopted. It is projected that the four modalities of ICLF strategies in Brazil will represent 17.42 million hectares in 2020 (in all the five biomes) [143].…”

“…Landers, Clay, and Weiss [63] showed a reduced demand for area expansion by land clearing of between 0.8 and 2.5 ha per hectare of LF. As a result of the Landers and Weiss report [64], Brazil set up a subsidized investment credit line for LF and for agroforestry with LF (iCLF), now absorbed in Brazilian Plan for Adaptation and Low Carbon Emission in Agriculture (Brazil's ABC Plan), described by Gurgel and Laurenzana [65] According to estimates of Polidoro and others [66], Brazil has 17.23 Mha of iCLF implanted up to 2021. In the most optimistic scenario, these authors estimate an area of 29.3 Mha by 2030, meaning an annual increase of 1.19 Mha.…”

“…Two studies provide an analysis of existing policies at national scale, in Brazil (Stuchi et al, 2021) and in Bosnia and Herzogovina Another study from Brazil (Polidoro et al, 2021) analyses the impacts of policies and plans established at the national and regional levels by the Brazilian Government, and the efforts of public and private institutions to encourage farmers to use the practices for controlling soil erosion and toward the massive adoption of zone tillage and conservation agriculture and integrated crop-livestock management systems under conservation agriculture in Brazil.…”
