Potential impact of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) on phenols degradation in an UASB reactor and its degradation properties

Abstract: Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as a solvent is extensively used for the phenols extraction from the wastewater, so it is unavoidable to expose in the effluent due to the solubility and leakage problem. The present study evaluated the impact of MIBK on phenols degradation in an UASB reactor and analyzed its degradation properties. The results indicated that the continuous dosing (0.1gL) and impact (10gL) of MIBK had limited effect on phenols removal (1-2% reduction) in the UASB reactor, but the specific methanog… Show more

“…Therefore, the specialized anaerobic microorganisms might be strengthened in the AnCMBR under the extremely high concentration of phenol. As calculated, phenol loading rate of sludge was correspondingly enhanced from 0.2 (longer SRT) to 0.275 (shorter SRT) g phenol g -1 MLVSS d -1 , and it was much higher than the reported values [24,29]. The strong performance robustness of AnCMBR treating high-strength phenol wastewater was mainly attributed to the efficient microbial community [30,31].…”

“…Examples for a category of such specialized studies could be effects of salinity or metal ions on the process inside of UASB, which would require extra electrical conductivity, ion-selective electrodes, or other quantitative measurements for both influent and effluent [134,135]. If the study is dedicated to toxicity or biodegradation of particular compound, the appropriate assay tests for that compound or its metabolites should be added [136,137], etc.…”

“…A metagenomic study showed that the abundances of ARGs in the PAH-contaminated soils collected from a petrochemical plant were approximately 15 times higher than those in the background sites (Chen et al 2017). Similarly, two typical PAHs (naphthalene and phenanthrene) were reported to dramatically enhance the relative abundance of intI1, sul1, and aadAII in a coastal microbial community by 1-2 orders of magnitude (Wang et al 2017b). Regarding the resistance phenotype upon exposure to PAHs, benzo(a)pyrene, pyrene, and phenanthrene were observed to confer the tetracycline resistant Shigella flexneri approximately 20% more sensitive to tetracycline (Rugare et al 2018), while the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC 50 ) of Escherichia coli (E. coli) to chloramphenicol and tetracycline increased by tenfold following triclosan [5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenol] exposure (Li et al 2019).…”

“…Herein, MIBK was selected because it dominated (93.11%) in the inlet of petrochemical wastewater treatment plant (Fig. S1), which has been identified as the key reservoir of ARGs (Chen et al 2017;Jing et al 2014) and could affect the activity of sludge and pure bacterial strains (Przybulewska and Wieczorek 2008;Wang et al 2017b). Specifically, the goals of this work were (1) to determine the variations of resistant phenotype and genotype in E. coli upon MIBK exposure, (2) to investigate the transformation of ARGs under MIBK stress, and (3) to elucidate the impacting mechanisms of MIBK on the antibiotic resistance in E. coli based on the changes of cell membrane integrity, ROS production, and ARGs expression.…”
