Potential health effects of tomato (lycopersicon esculentum) juice and hypoglycemic amelioration in the atherogenic indices between diabetic animal models

Abstract: This study aimed firstly to evaluate the antioxidants levels (Lycopene & Beta-carotene) within fresh tomato juice (FTJ) and its health effects on atherogenic indices in association to lipid profiles and kidney functions between diabetic animal models. Rats (thirty-two; 180 ± 5 g) were randomly divided to groups; control negative (G1; non-diabetic), control positive (G2; fed standard basil diet), and three diabetic groups induced by single dose of streptozotocin (STZ; 65 mg/kg body weight). Groups of diabetic G… Show more

“…Additionally, tomatoes contain kaempferol, a dietary flavonoid that boosts antioxidant capacity and lowers indicators of lipid peroxidation (Al‐Numair et al., 2015 ). Due to its high concentration of lycopene and β‐carotene, tomato juice has been found to have hypoglycemic and antiatherogenic benefits in diabetic rats (Khalil et al., 2022 ). According to Esmaeilzadeh et al.…”

“…It contains the pigment lycopene, which lowers blood sugar levels by lowering insulin resistance(Tarigan et al, 2020).Additionally, tomatoes contain kaempferol, a dietary flavonoid that boosts antioxidant capacity and lowers indicators of lipid peroxidation(Al-Numair et al, 2015). “…Tomato with its low calorie and low fat content, is characterized as a healthy vegetable with lycopene, β-carotene, niacin, vitamins A, B, C, and K, and its mineral substances, such as potassium, calcium, and iron (Willcox et al, 2010;Yahia and Brecht, 2012). It is very important for health, with its powerful antioxidant content (Khalil et al, 2022) such as vitamins A, C, and E, which help to reduce the risk of cancer. It is also a rich source of lycopene, which gained importance with the development and application of lycopene in food, medicine, cosmetics, and other fields (Xie et al, 2022), and consumption of tomatoes is effective in reducing the risk of cancer death (Mazidi et al, 2020).…”
