Potential Hazard to Eastern Screech-Owls and Other Raptors of Brodifacoum Bait Used for Vole Control in Orchards

Abstract: During the fall and winter of 1981–82, a study was conducted to evaluate the secondary poisoning hazards associated with a proposed anticoagulant rodenticide, Volid® (10 ppm brodifacoum), when used to control voles (Microtus spp.) in apple orchards. Radio transmitters were attached to 38 eastern screech‐owls (Otus asio), 5 barred owls (Strix varia), 3 red‐tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), 2 great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) and 2 long‐eared owls (Asio otus), and the birds' movements were monitored before, d… Show more

“…Current management practices in agro-ecosystems mostly rely on culling animals using poisons and traps (Fiedler & Fall 1994;Singleton et al 2007a. However, the use of poisons can pose a considerable threat to non-target species (Hegdal & Colvin 1988) and the environment because poisons are unspecific and highly toxic. Killing rodents is inhumane because poisons registered for rodent control can cause considerable suffering before the animal dies.…”

“…To keep the density of rodents in an appropriate range is often a great challenge. Since poisons and traps often cause considerable threats to non‐target species and even the whole ecosystem (Hegdal & Colvin, ), habitat manipulation has recently been adopted as an ecologically based method for rodent control (Jacob, ). However, it is crucial to comprehensively understand how organisms respond to these practices.…”

“…Not only might adult mortality be determined, but also that of young, and thus both long-term and short-term impact on productivity. Artificial nest sites have been used in some studies to provide specific locations to look for nesting raptors and to monitor nesting success (Hegdal & Blaskiewicz, 1984).…”

“…In a study of Rattus norvegicus (Norway rat) and Mus musculus (house mouse) control on farmsteads (in and around buildings), Hegdal & Blaskiewicz (1984) and Colvin (1984) found that the potential hazard to Tyto alba (barn owl) from brodifacoum bait (50 ppm) was low. Although the owls nested and roosted on farmsteads, they demonstrated selective behavior for grassland foraging habitat and microtine rodents.…”
