Potential Geographic Distribution of Hantavirus Reservoirs in Brazil

Abstract: Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome is an emerging zoonosis in Brazil. Human infections occur via inhalation of aerosolized viral particles from excreta of infected wild rodents. Necromys lasiurus and Oligoryzomys nigripes appear to be the main reservoirs of hantavirus in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes. We estimated and compared ecological niches of the two rodent species, and analyzed environmental factors influencing their occurrence, to understand the geography of hantavirus transmission. N. lasiuru… Show more

“…Some hantavirus species are linked with HFRS and others with HPS, each with specifi c environmental scenarios and climate patterns. In the rural areas of the DF, the reservoir for hantavirus transmission is the wild rodent Necromys lasiurus (15) (16) (17) .…”

“…In Brazil, the first occurrence of HPS was reported in 1993 in the city of Juquitiba, in the state of Sao Paulo [4]. Since then, knowledge of the disease has been growing parallel to its range in Brazil; the presence of the disease has been established in all regions of the country [5,6]. HPS is a notifiable disease for the Brazilian Ministry of Health and its importance for public health is due to the high case-fatality rates (~ 40%) and limited knowledge about its epidemiology [1,2].…”

“…Is an omnivorous and terrestrial species which feeds mainly on seeds [6]. Is widely distributed within the Brazilian Cerrado and Caatinga biomes, areas where human land use and modification of the natural environment are widespread.…”

“…The most prevalent viral variants of hantavirus are Juquitiba, which occurs in wild rodents living in the Atlantic Forest region; Araraquara, which occurs in wild rodents from the cerrado and caatinga biomes (typical Brazilian vegetation) 10 ; Castelo dos Sonhos, which is present in rodents living in the cerrado and Amazon Rainforest; and Anajatuba, which has been found in wild rodents living in the Amazon Rainforest and fl ooded regions 11 . In Brazil, hantavirosis manifests as hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), and the primary symptoms include fever, myalgia, flank and abdominal pain, severe cephalgia, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; unfortunately, these unspecifi c symptoms can be confused with many other diseases 11,12 .…”
