The aim of our research was to gather information about the reproduction cycle of Austopotamobius torrentium in Croatia. The research was conducted between October 1998 and April 2000 in streams on the Medvednica Mountain (north-west Croatia). We caught 767 females, of which 92 (11.99%) were berried. Berried females were captured from the beginning of November until mid June of the following year. Total length (from the tip of the rostrum to the end of telson) of the smallest female with pleopodal eggs was 5.40 cm, while the longest was 8.70 cm. Diameter of pleopodal eggs varied from 0.24 cm to 0.34 cm (mean ± SD = 0.28 ± 0.02) and their number per female from 1 to 104. Correlations between female size (total length and weight), number of pleopodal eggs and egg diameter were done. We found positive correlation between female length and number of eggs (r = 0.46) and between female length and egg diameter (r = 0.29), as well as between female weight and egg number (r = 0.50) and female weight and egg diameter (r = 0.30). Weak positive correlation was recorded between number of eggs and their diameter (r = 0.06).Key-words: stone crayfish, Austropotamobius torrentium, fecundity, egg size. This study is the first to 18 determine and compare the population biology of a parastacid from both lentic and lotic systems 19 and aimed to gather the information necessary for more effective management of the fishery. 20Modal progression demonstrated growth rates of juvenile C. cainii were greater in the lentic 21 (Wellington Dam) compared to the lotic (Warren River) system, however, mark-recapture 22 suggested the growth rate of the adult component of the lentic population was stunted whereas in 23 the lotic population 60-90 mm OCL individuals were common and had a faster growth rate. The 24Wellington Dam stock appeared to be over-exploited and had very low productivity whereas the 25 Warren River stock had relatively low fishing exploitation and a high productivity resulting from 26 higher growth rates coupled with higher population densities (with the trappable population sizes 27 estimated using the open POPAN formulation in the MARK software program). Comparisons of 28 these biological parameters were made with populations elsewhere and there existed a considerable 29 plasticity that is probably due to differences in thermal regimes, degree of habitat complexity, food 30 resource availability and fisher accessibility. RESUMEN. El camarón de río del sur Samastacus spinifrons, es una de las seis especies de la Familia Parastacidae (Crustacea, Decapoda, Astacidea) que habita las aguas dulces de Chile desde el río Aconcagua hasta la península de Taitao, y actualmente, la única que es considerada atractiva para la acuicultura nacional. En este artículo se revisa su potencial para la acuicultura con fines comerciales o de repoblamiento. Para ello se analizan: a) las ventajas y desventajas biológicas de esta especie ante eventuales actividades de cultivo en confinamiento; b) las experiencias de cultivo que a la fecha se han efectuado en Chile haciendo énfasis en sus respectivos aportes; y, c) las probables causas que han impedido que su cultivo se consolide en el país. Finalmente, de acuerdo a los análisis antes señalados se plantea una propuesta de cultivo que se considera la más adecuada para S. spinifrons. The freshwater crayfish Samastacus spinifrons, is one of six species of the Family Parastacidae (Crustacea, Decapoda, Astacidea) inhabiting freshwaters in Chile from the Aconcagua River to the Taitao Peninsula, and the only one that is currently considered attractive for national aquaculture. In this article, we review the potential of this species for aquaculture with commercial or restocking purposes. For this, we analyze: a) the species' biological advantages and disadvantages in an eventual situation of confined culture; b) previous culturing experiences carried out in Chile, with an emphasis on their respective contributions; and c) the causes that were likely to have prevented the consolidation of culturing this species in Chile. Finally, the above analyses provided the basis for our proposal of the most appropriate way to culture S. spinifrons.
