Potential barriers and facilitators for implementation of an integrated care pathway for hearing-impaired persons: an exploratory survey among patients and professionals

Abstract: Background: Because of the increasing costs and anticipated shortage of Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists in the care for hearing-impaired persons, an integrated care pathway that includes direct hearing aid provision was developed. While this direct pathway is still under investigation, in a survey we examined expectations and potential barriers and facilitators towards this direct pathway, of patients and professionals involved in the pathway.

We found that 42% of the respondents preferred hearing aid provision by referral; 39% preferred direct hearing aid provision, and 18% graded them equally.…”

[9,10] found that both persons with hearing complaints and professionals in the area of hearing rehabilitation are receptive to transferring elements of hearing aid provision from the medical sector to private dispensers. One of the conditions most professionals stated as necessary for shared care in hearing aid provision was that clear guidelines be available to distinguish between patients and clients.…”
