Protected areas are essential conservation tools for mitigating the rapid decline of biodiversity. However, climate change represents one of the main challenges to their long‐term effectiveness, as it induces rapid changes in the geographical distribution of many species. We used ecological niche modelling to predict the impacts of climate change on the distribution of five endemic owls in the Atlantic Forest and evaluated the effectiveness of the protected areas network for their conservation. The results indicate that the protected areas network is currently effective in terms of representativeness for most species; however, there will be a decline for all species in the coming decades because of climate change. We found that the ecoregions in the northern part of the Atlantic Forest will experience a higher loss of species, whereas those ecoregions in the southern part will be important stable climatic refuges in the future. Therefore, we emphasize the need to complement the network of protected areas to increase their representativeness in the distribution of species that will be affected by climate change, reducing species loss and increasing connectivity between suitable areas. We hope the results presented herein will serve as a basis for decision‐makers to re‐evaluate and improve current conservation policies and decisions in order to address the challenges posed by climate change and secure the survival of these species.

Gene flow studies provide information on gene exchange between populations, which is essential for developing genetic conservation strategies. Such analyses enable a better understanding of the life history and seed and pollen dispersal mechanisms of plant species. In this study, we investigate pollen and seed flow in a regenerant population of the pioneer species Astronium fraxinifolium in an area degraded during the construction of a hydroelectric dam. We mapped, sampled, sexed, and genotyped 386 individuals in the regenerant population (RP), as well as 128 adult trees located along two highways adjacent to the degraded area; one in Mato Grosso do Sul State (MS) and other in São Paulo State (SP). Parentage analyses was carried out for 370 individuals of the RP population, using as putative parents 348 individuals from RP and all 128 individuals sampled in MS and SP. Based on parentage analysis and eight microsatellite loci, our analyses revealed that for individuals of the RP with an identified father (pollen donor), 1.1% of the pollen was dispersed up to 532 m, while for those with an identified mother (seed donor), 0.5% of seeds were dispersed up to 4,782 m. However, a large proportion of pollen (76.5%) and seeds (57%) immigrated from trees outside the sampled populations. Pollen and seeds were dispersed through a pattern of isolation by distance. Genetic diversity was significantly similar between adults of both highway populations and individuals from RP, with significant levels of inbreeding detected only in RP. Our results demonstrate that the nearest trees contributed pollen and seeds for the recovery of the degraded area, indicating reproductive spatial isolation among the sampled populations due to the damming of the river. Such results help to understand the process of regeneration for A. fraxinifolium in regenerant populations to inform strategies for conservation and environmental recovery with this species.

A transformação de habitats em remanescentes florestais compromete o desenvolvimento das relações ecológicas, traz prejuízos à vegetação e ocasiona a diminuição da biodiversidade. Corredores ecológicos conectam fragmentos e atuam como ferramenta de gestão territorial, aumentando as chances de sobrevivência das espécies a longo prazo. Este estudo aborda a temática de corredores e suas aplicações, dividido em dois capítulos: uma revisão bibliográfica e uma pesquisa de campo. O primeiro capítulo trabalha diferentes perspectivas relacionadas a definições, eficiência e leis aplicadas a corredores ecológicos no decorrer dos anos, fundamentado em uma revisão de caráter exploratório e seletivo, priorizando publicações a partir de 1990. As palavras-chave utilizadas foram: fragmentação; matriz; conservação; primatas; e avifauna; em português e inglês, combinadas aleatoriamente, resultando na seleção de 16 artigos para o tópico I, 23 artigos para o tópico II e 16 artigos para o tópico III. Obteve-se uma média de 18 artigos considerados principais, ou produções acadêmicas similares, de acordo com a aderência ao tema dos tópicos, sendo eles: (I) Fragmentação florestal e conceitos sobre corredores ecológicos; (II) Eficiência de corredores ecológicos na conservação da biodiversidade e (III) Políticas públicas aplicadas aos corredores ecológicos e sua influência na proteção ambiental. O segundo capítulo trabalha a hipótese de que a área proposta no corredor ecológico utilizada pela fauna é eficiente na manutenção da biodiversidade local, especialmente para aves e primatas ameaçados de extinção. O objetivo principal é avaliar a eficiência de um corredor entre duas unidades de conservação no sul da Bahia, utilizando como referência grupos da fauna de vertebrados, envolvendo quatro espécies de primatas (Callithrix geoffroyi, Sapajus robustus, Callicebus melanochir e Alouatta guariba guariba) e a avifauna ameaçada de extinção dentro da área avaliada, a fim de verificar a viabilidade e consolidação do corredor proposto. O levantamento de primatas é realizado através da reprodução de playbacks nas sete áreas selecionadas para campanha. A presença ou ausência da avifauna é inventariada em conjunto com o monitoramento de primatas. Os resultados mostram que, dentre os primatas, o C. geoffroyi é a espécie mais avistada em trânsito no corredor, seguida por indivíduos de C. melanochir. A espécie S. robustus está presente apenas nas áreas protegidas e não há registro do A. guariba na pesquisa. 14 espécies de aves ameaçadas estão presentes nas áreas de campanha. Não há registros de diferentes grupos faunísticos considerados em risco. Os resultados mostram que o padrão de similaridade entre as áreas amostradas é afetado pelo tipo de habitat constituinte e não há diferença significativa entre as áreas quanto a riqueza de espécies. Ainda assim, as áreas rurais neste estudo são semelhantes as áreas protegidas. O corredor é eficiente para fornecer o trânsito de fauna e algumas espécies endêmicas e ameaçadas conseguem persistir na paisagem fragmentada. Também apresenta a importância das áreas protegidas na conservação ambiental, pela preservação e riqueza dessas áreas. Pela análise dos capítulos, pode-se concluir que a proposição de um corredor ecológico para aumentar a permeabilidade da matriz favorece o movimento de fauna e a perpetuação de espécies em ecossistemas degradados.
