Potential Areas for the Formation of Ecological Corridors Between Remnants of Atlantic Forest

Abstract: -In Brazil, the remaining areas of Atlantic Forest are intensely fragmented. The connection of forest fragments through ecological corridors is an important step in biodiversity conservation. Certain areas are more resilient, and in those areas, natural forest regeneration, for example, can be encouraged. The aim of this study was to identify areas of greater resilience in order to support the connection of Atlantic Forest fragments with ecological corridors. Forest fragments in the municipality of Paraíba do … Show more

“…2005, Santos et al . 2016). Greater connectivity between PAs would help species adapt to changing conditions by allowing them to move to areas with more suitable habitats, thus reducing the risk of extinction; it also supports genetic exchange between populations, promoting genetic diversity (Tabarelli et al .…”

“…2005, Santos et al . 2016). However, we recognize that the creation of new PAs is not enough to ensure their long‐term persistence and that complementary conservation measures are necessary, such as the implementation of strong laws that stop the current levels of loss and fragmentation of habitat, the recovery and restoration of forests, and intensive population management that ensures their reproduction and survival (Develey & Phalan 2021).…”

“…Individuals in RP presented a higher N e (144), indicating that the effective population size of these individuals is sufficient for in situ conservation. But, the creation of ecological corridors linking the fragments can promote increases in gene flow and the N e in degraded landscapes [ 70 ].…”
