Potential application of Conyza canadensis (L) Cronquist in the management of diabetes: In vitro and in vivo evaluation

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the antihyperglycemic activity of Conyza canadensis via α-glucosidase inhibition in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Methods: In vitro antidiabetic activity was investigated using α-glucosidase inhibition assay with acarbose (62.5, 125, 500 and 1000 µg/ml) as the standard drug. Conyza canadensis crude extract (Cc.Cr) in doses of 10, 30, 100 and 300 mg/kg were administered daily as a single dose to alloxaninduced (200 mg/kg) diabetic mice (Balb/c), and its effect on fasting blood glucose l… Show more

“…Apart from presently available drugs, several herbal medicines have been recommended for the management DM. Traditional medicinal plants and plants-based remedies are used all over the world for a range of diseases, including DM (Aslam et al, 2018). The hypoglycaemic activity of medicinal plants including Euclea undulata var.…”

“…The α-glucosidase inhibitory potentials of solvent extracts from E. caeruleum were investigated following the reported protocol (Aslam et al, 2018). The enzyme solution was made by dissolving 0.5 unit/ml in a 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 6.9).…”

“…20,21 It is characterized by excessive blood sugar level (hyperglycemia) in postprandial and is followed by ketoacidosis and protein-losing. 23 α-Glucosidase is a vital biological target/enzyme which catalyzes the degradation of diet polysaccharides to monosaccharide. Naturally or synthetically prepared glucosidase inhibitors are of therapeutic interest to put off postprandial hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes.…”

“…Each of the variety of species has its own significance for different purposes, too. For example, Conyza Canadensis has a property of reducing blood glucose levels and simultaneously improving glucose tolerance and hence is taken as a cure for diabetes [22]. Similarly, Cannabis Sativus and Artemisia Absinthium both are associated with a cure for different types of cancers [23][24].…”
