The aim of this study is to determine the individuals’ knowledge, attitudes, and experiences concerning sumac (Rhus coriaria L.). The researchers collected the data from 139 participants, living in the cities of Siirt and Mardin, by using a survey, prepared based on the relevant literature, between 01 July and 15 August 2021. The mean age of the participants was 24.42±4.44 (min:18 – max:65) and 82.0% of them were female. 45.3% of the participants had an undergraduate or higher education. 81.3% of the participants stated that they had knowledge about the health benefits of sumac. 74.1% of them stated that they obtained this information from their family, partner, friend, and relatives. When the frequency of consuming sumac was evaluated, 28.1% of the participants stated that they consumed it once a week and 20.9% every day. 80.6% of the participants stated that sumac was effective for the treatment of stomach disorders, 79.9% for the treatment of infection, 74.1% for the treatment of influenza, 67.6% for alleviating respiratory distress, 63.3% for the treatment of gastric ulcer, and 59.7% for lowering blood pressure. Based on the experiences of the individuals, it was determined that sumac was effective for the treatment of stomach disorders (80.6%), the treatment of infection (79.9%), the treatment of influenza (74.1%), alleviating respiratory distress (67.6%), the treatment of gastric ulcer (63.3%), and lowering blood pressure (59.7%).

In the East, it has already become a tradition to prepare dry powdered seasonings from the fruits of the sumac plant (Rhus coriaria L.). In this work, we tested their processing by extraction. Sumac was collected in mid-September in a mountain forest near the village of Gezik (Guba, Azerbaijan). Before extraction, it was first dehydrated in a drying cabinet SH-DO-149 FG (Southern Bark) to an air-dry state; then crushed in a Tube Mill control mill (Germany) into pieces of 1-3 mm in size. One- and two-stage maceration extraction was tested together with water or acidified water at temperatures from 20 to 80 °C. Evaporation of primary extracts was carried out in a rotary evaporator Lab Rot 2 L (China). The concentration of coloring substances in the extract (in units of optical density) was used as an output parameter. It was found that the use of two-stage extraction and acidified water with a concentration of citric acid 0.3 g/cm3 contributes to the extraction of the maximum amount of coloring substances and increases the transparency of the resulting extracts, which allows the extracted extracts to be concentrated directly to obtain a new type of natural food dye. The involvement of sumac fruits in industrial processing will increase the need for these medicinal fruits, and this, in turn, will serve as an incentive for the introduction of this medicinal plant into culture.

Background and Objective: Cancer is a complex interaction among multiple signalling pathways involving a variety of target molecules.Nanoparticles were used in cancer treatment because of their intrinsic anticancer properties. The use of plant extracts in the preparation of metallic nanoparticles as a convenient substitute has been proposed. This study assessed the cytotoxic, antioxidant and apoptotic effects of copper nanoparticles shelled with either turmeric or sumac biosynthesized as core-shell nanostructures on the liver tumour cell line (Huh-7). Materials and Methods: The nanostructures were synthesized by sonochemical method and characterization was done to confirm the successful synthesis within the nanoscale. Cytotoxicity of nanostructures was investigated on Huh-7 and normal kidney epithelial cell lines (VERO). Malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, reduced glutathione and superoxide dismutase were estimated in cell lysate to assess the antioxidant properties of nanostructures. Caspase-3 was also measured as an apoptotic marker. Results: Both nanostructures had low IC 50 on Huh-7 cells and a non-toxic effect on VERO cells. The cytotoxic effect was coupled with a significant increase in antioxidant activities and apoptotic efficiency compared to control. Conclusion: The findings summarized here support the utilization of biosynthesized copper with turmeric or sumac as core-shell nanostructures as a novel chemotherapeutic drug for cancer treatment that improves antioxidant effect that modulates the side effect of cytotoxicity. Also, it is obvious that copper nanostructure biosynthesized with turmeric has a more advanced effect than that of sumac.
