A crude acetone extract and oil of ripe fruits from Melia azedarach L. were evaluated against the 2 nd and 4 th instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Both oil and extract exhibited highly signifi cant growth inhibition at all concentrations tested, while the oil of M. azedarach recorded higher insecticidal activity against both instars than the crude extract. GC-MS analysis of the oil revealed the presence of linoleic acid methyl ester, oleic acid methyl ester, and free oleic acid as the main components in addition to hexadecanol, palmitic acid, methyl esters of stearic acid and myristic acid. Fatty acids and their esters were not only the main constituents of essential oil from the ripe fruits of M. azedarach, but also mainly responsible for the insecticidal and growth inhibition activity against S. littoralis.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the methanolic extracts from the leaves, bark and flowers of Trichilia silvatica on Spodoptera frugiperda. Also, it was use in evaluating the total phenolic and flavonoid content of methanolic extracts. We also reported chemical study on the most active extract. Corn leaves were immersed in a 1% methanolic extract solution and fed to second instars of S. frugiperda. The extract of the T. silvatica (LTS) leaves decreased the viability of the larva, prolonged larval duration, affected the pupal biomass, decreased the period of oviposition and the number of eggs as well as affected the egg viability. The methanolic extract of the T. silvatica (BTS) bark decreased the larval viability, oviposition period, number of eggs and egg viability. The flower extract of T. silvatica (FTS) decreased the larval viability and period of oviposition. In relation to the constituent contents, the methanolic extract of the leaves showed highest total phenol (233.37 mg gallic acid/g of extract) and flavonoid (53.17 mg quercetin/g of extract) content. The chemical study of the FTS resulted in α-tocopherol, sitosterol 3-O-glucopyranoside, mustakone and N-metilproline. Our results indicate that the extracts affected the biology of S. frugiperda, with LTS being the most promising.

Biological activity of Melia azedarach extracts against Spodoptera exigua

Melia azedarach is a plant species whose fruits posses nematicidal and insecticidal activity. In this study, we tested two M. azedarach extracts: a crude methanolic fruit extract (CRU) and its limonoids fraction (LIM) produced after partitioning with dichloromethane to check their insecticidal activity against beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua. Both extracts disturbed development of S. exigua. After exposure to CRU and LIM, hatching success was slightly lower, larvalpupal and pupal-imago moulting was significantly disturbed. In physiological studies, CRU extracts decreased the heartbeat of S. exigua pupae. Electron microscopic studies revealed that both extracts caused malformations of fat body and midgut cells. The most common observed malformations were: vacuolization of mitochondria, swollen endoplasmic reticulum and degeneration of nuclei. Obtained results indicated that M. azedarach fruits are a source of substances that may be used in plant protection against S. exigua. Despite the fact that M. azedarach extracts do not cause acute effects, their usage may lead to serious disturbances within exposed insects and significantly decrease activity of pests.
