“…Since the 1960s, sperm cryopreservation has been introduced as a routine practice in infertility clinics (Najafi et al, ). This technique is being utilised for several indications, including donor insemination programmes, before treatments which my hurt fertility potential such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, orchiectomy and vasectomy, testicular sperm retrieval in azoospermic cases and epididymal sperm aspiration (obstructive azoospermia), gender reassignment, spinal cord injury and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (Banihani & Alawneh, ; Pabon & Meseguer, ; Wierckx et al, ; Yang, Xu, Cui, Wu, & Liao, ). Freezing spermatozoon is performed before intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to rule out cycle cancellation for failure to collect semen specimen on the day of the in vitro fertilisation/ICSI attempt (Montagut et al, ).…”

“…A synthetic derivate/analogue of HN, called HN-S14G (HNG), was designed with amino acid substitution of serine at amino acid residue 14 to glycine ( Hashimoto et al, 2001b ), which demonstrated more potent effects than wild type HN on the reduction of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), preservation of mitochondrial membrane potential and structure with cardioprotective activity in vivo ( Klein et al, 2013 ; Minasyan et al, 2017 ). Consistently, HNG also showed reduced damage to the mitochondrial membrane and DNA integrity, and attenuation of the reaction of oxidative stress and the activity of caspase-3 in sperm ( Yang et al, 2019 ). Pre-treatment using HNG also showed protective effects on epidermal stem cells (ESC) against ultraviolet (UV)-B-induced cytotoxicity ( Wang et al, 2019 ).…”

“…HN inhibited NMDA-induced oxidative stress and nitric oxide (NO) production in cultured rat cortical neurons [75]. Further, HN protected cells from ischemia and reperfusion induced a significant increase in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, MDA formation in cortical neurons and HN also induced ROS generation and MDA levels in human sperm upon freeze-thaw [76]. All these data collectively suggest that HN has a potential to induce protective response to oxidative and nitro-oxidative stress, lipoperoxidation and the carbonylated protein content in SH-SY5Y cells.…”
