RESUMOA pesquisa teve como objetivos a caracterização físico mecânica da madeira de jurema-preta (Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir.) e a confecção de um móvel com a madeira em estudo para verificar suas características estéticas e de acabamento superficial. Para tanto, foram colhidas cinco árvores de jurema-preta na Caatinga do estado da Paraíba, na Fazenda Lameirão, localizada no município de Santa Terezinha -PB, confeccionados corpos de prova, e realizados ensaios físico mecânicos de acordo com a Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas. Foram realizados ensaios para determinação da umidade, densidades aparente e básica, retratibilidade, resistência e rigidez à compressão paralela às fibras. Para a aquisição dos dados foram empregados Transdutores de Deslocamento Linear (LVDTs). Os valores obtidos na pesquisa indicaram que a madeira de jurema-preta possui boa estabilidade dimensional e características de resistência e rigidez compatíveis para seu emprego em móveis e pequenas estruturas.Palavras-chave: Caatinga, mobiliário, qualidade da madeira Physical and mechanical characterization of Mimosa tenuiflora wood for employment in furniture industry ABSTRACTThe research aimed to obtain the physic mechanical characterization of Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir. and manufacture a furniture with wood in study and to verify their aesthetic characteristics and superficial finishing. Thus, five trees of Mimosa tenuiflora had been harvested, in Brazilian Savanna (Caatinga) at Lameirão Farm, located in the municipality of Santa Terezinha, Paraíba state, Brazil, manufactured test samples and carried through physical-mechanical wood characterization in accordance with the Standard Brazilian. Assays for determination of basic and apparent densities and moisture, shrinkage and strength and rigidity to compression parallel to the fibers had been carried. For data acquisition was employed Linear Displacement Transducers (LVDTs). The values obtained in research indicated that the wood of Mimosa tenuiflora has good dimensional stability and strength and rigidity characteristics compatible for employ in furniture and small structures.

The objective of this study was the characterization, analysis and compaction of residues from castor oil plant pie extraction to verify its potential as solid biofuel. The chemical analysis, the mechanical test and the gross calorific value had satisfactory results. With the extraction of residual oil of the material there was a decrease on the high heating value. The produced briquettes presented good longitudinal expansion as well as mechanical strenght, however the presence of residual oil had influence on their strenght. In conclusion, the castor oil plant pie possesses energetic characteristics suitable for solid biofuel production, in addition it contributes with the reduction of industrial waste amount.
