Potato Starch for Enhancing the Properties of the Drilling Fluids

Abstract: Different additives are used in drilling fluids when the demanded properties cannot be gotten with clays. Drilling muds needs several additives and materials to give good characteristics. There are local alternatives more suitable for enhancing the rheology and filtration of drilling fluids. An experimental work had been conducted to assess the suitability of using potato starch to enhance rheological properties and filtration in drilling mud. This study investigated the potato starch as a viscosifier and flui… Show more

“…Lifting Capacity adalah kemampuan fluida pemboran dalam membersihkan lubang sumur pemboran dengan pengangkatan cutting. Beberapa faktor yang mempengaruhi lifting capacity adalah densitas dari fluida pemboran, viskositas fluida pemboran, tipe aliran fluida, ukuran lubang anulus, kecepatan pada lubang anulus, serta bentuk dan ukuran cutting [3].…”

“…Generally, plants contain various metabolites and effective phytochemicals including terpenoids, polyphenols, sugars, alkaloids, amides, flavones and phenolic which are the main bio-reduction components of metal ions from metal salts yielding nanoparticles [7]. In 2018, Assi, used potato starch as drilling fluid additive and results showed improved filtration loss and mud cake consistency also, it increased basic rheological parameters in high pH media [8]. In 2019, Al-Hameedi et al worked on introducing grass powder (GP) as drilling fluid additive and results showed viscosity improvement from 8 to 9 cP, gel strength improvement from 22 to 26 lb/100ft 2 and 28% reduction in fluid loss [9].…”

“…Various methods of modifications such as chemical, physical, and thermal treatment are available. Talukdar and Gogoi, [7] used the Pre-Gelatinized Starch (PGS) as the fluid loss control agent in the Non Damaging Drilling Fluid (NDDF) and demonstrated the effectiveness of the use of formaldehyde (Bactericide) as the biodegradation control agent in the Non Damaging Drilling Fluid (NDDF). The method of chemical modification via Carboxymethylation was used in this study.…”
