Potato Response to Nitrogen Sources and Rates in an Irrigated Sandy Soil

Abstract: Management strategies to reduce N losses to the environment from potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production while maintaining yields depend on selecting the right N source and rate. A 5-yr (2008-2012) fi eld experiment was conducted on an irrigated sandy soil in Quebec, Canada, to examine the eff ect of N fertilizer source and rate on total (TY) and marketable tuber yield (MY), total plant N accumulation (vines + tubers), specifi c gravity, culls (unmarketable tubers), and apparent fertilizer N recovery (ANR). … Show more

“…This part of the study discusses the common opinion regarding tuber yield response to water and nutrient supply to potato (Cambouris et al., 2016; Tan et al., 2016). The tuber yield obtained was significantly governed by two factors, interacting with each other.…”

“…The TY obtained in NB and in QC was above that obtained in NB by Snowdon, Zebarth, Burton, Goyer, and Rochette (2013; 30.2 Mg ha −1 ) and in QC by Cambouris et al. (2016; 16.3–38.3 Mg ha −1 ) for Russet Burbank variety. In PEI, potato yield was in the range of those reported by Nyiraneza, Peters, Rodd, Grimmett, and Jiang (2015) for Shepody variety (20–27 Mg ha −1 ).…”

“…All sites were fertilized with P, K, and Mg at rates recommended in each region from the soil analysis. Information on the soil available P and K contents along with the rates of P, K, and Mg fertilizers can be found in Cambouris et al (2016) for the Québec site and Nyiraneza et al (2015) for the Charlottetown site. We assumed that P, K, and Mg were not limiting potato growth and yield at any of the sites.…”

“…The plant N concentration was determined using the dry combustion method on an Elementar analyzer (Vario Max, Elementar Analyzer). More details about site description and sampling protocol are available in Morier et al (2015) and Cambouris et al (2016). All data from 2012 were used for model calibration, while data from 2010 and 2011 were used for model performance evaluation.…”
