Potassium Catalytic Effect on Gasification Reactions of Coal and Coal/Biomass Blends under Oxy-combustion Conditions. An Isotopic Study Using 13C18O2

Abstract: In the present study, 20 wt % K 2 CO 3 was added to coal and coal/biomass blends in 20:80 wt % ratio and subsequently were heating-treated at 600 °C using CO 2 or N 2 atmospheres. The reactivity under oxy-combustion conditions (21 % O 2 + 79 % CO 2 ) was studied by thermogravimetry, and characterization of chars was carried out by N 2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was observed higher activation energy for impregnated coal/biomass blends compared to impr… Show more

“…They found that with the increase of the ratio of petroleum coke in the blends, I G /I All gradually increased and I D 3 +D 4 /I G decreased, indicating a more uniformity of the char. Betancur et al 259 studied the potassium catalytic effect on gasification reactions of coal/biomass blends and emphatically analyzed the carbon structures of the char with RS. In this study, they used four bands, including the D, V, S, and G bands to curve-fit the Raman spectra.…”

“…As seen in other reports, potassium is the most abundant element in ash from this type of biomass; a thorough investigation of the content of different elements in potatoes is provided in [ 45 ] and [ 46 ]. Potassium ions are known to catalyze the gasification of coal [ 47 ], which is why they can catalyze the combustion of carbonaceous deposits in furnaces.…”

“…Stable isotope tracing is a widely used method in the study of chemical reaction processes. It relies on stable isotopes, such as D 2 O, D 2 , and 18 O 2 , as tracers to track the transfer and transformation of atoms or molecules during chemical reactions. By analysis of the distribution of stable isotopes in the reaction products, the nature of reaction intermediates and transition states can be inferred, revealing the detailed steps of the reaction. This method is essential to understanding the specific mechanisms of complex reactions.…”
