Postural Habits of Young Adults and Possibilities of Modification

Abstract: 1. Non-ergonomic postural behaviours are common among young people. 2. Changing the body position does not eliminate the impact of the inappropriate habit. 3. An attempt to modify non-ergonomic postural behaviours usually results in pain, which may act as a demotivating factor. 4. Discomfort associated with the modification of habitual postural behaviours is reduced after 3-4 months of regular training.

“…By asking some questions, it was found again that sport or even just physical activity, was poorly practiced. This condition decreased further in maturity, indeed the percentage of them who still play a sport was really low [3]. Anyway the ones who showed a reduced tropism represented the minority.…”

“…Only a small percentage of parents are seriously concerned about the posture of their children; and the outcome is that when these children reach adolescence, they show paramorphisms and dysmorphisms that are difficult to correct. The high percentage of adolescents with a poor posture may derive from a lack of postural education at home or at school [3]. Modulation of postural tone is managed by a complex system that can regulate and adapt itself, the so-called tonic postural system.…”

“…It should be noted that eliminating improper habitual behaviors is associated with a discomfort that decreases in young people only after 3–4 months of systematic work [ 43 ]. Early postural evaluation may help prevent or at least reduce spinal problems at later stages of life [ 44 ].…”

“…Moreover, a lot of healthy people have poor postural patterns in standing, sitting and recumbent positions with non-ergonomic postural behaviors. It could be an interesting topic, still rarely studied in literature and, also, there is a gap in knowledge of anticipatory postural adjustment alterations in MS patients in the early stage [Massot et al, 2019;Nowotny-Czupryna et al, 2013].…”
