Posttraumatic stress disorder, alcohol use, and physical health concerns

Abstract: PTSD is a risk factor for alcohol problems and both in turn have been independently associated with increased health problems. However, it is unclear whether alcohol use moderates the relationship between PTSD and health. Participants were battered women (N = 336) recruited from local domestic violence shelters and non-shelter victim-assistance agencies. A 2 (PTSD diagnosis) × 3 (abstainer, infrequent/light, regular/heavy drinking) ANCOVA was conducted, with injuries and length of abuse as covariates and healt… Show more

“…Future studies should examine how Asian culture affects these mediational models. It is important to note that the measures included for this study also did not address social or health functioning although both of these domains can be affected by both alcohol use and by trauma exposure (Kaysen et al, 2008;Ullman & Brecklin, 2003;Ullman et al, 2005). Future research should include measures of social and health functioning as additional domains that may be adversely affected by IR and moderated by ethnicity.…”

“…Consistent with prior studies (Kaysen et al, 2008), complaints were dichotomously coded (present/absent) and then summed to create a continuous count variable indicating total number of physical health complaints endorsed, range = 0–46; M(SD) = 18.61(10.07). Individuals who endorse more complaints on the PILL are more aware of unpleasant physical and somatic sensations than those who endorse fewer complaints.…”

“…Although a much more limited literature to date, similar results have been found in civilian women and men with PTSD predicting increased health problems and complaints (Bedard-Gilligan, Cronce, Lehavot, Blayney, & Kaysen, 2014; Kaysen et al, 2008; Kimerling, 2004). Given the context of minority stress, coupled with the high prevalence of trauma exposure, PTSD, and physical health problems among sexual minority women, understanding the relationship between trauma exposure, PTSD, and physical functioning in this population may be particularly important for strategic interventions related to both mental and physical health.…”
