Currently, according to World Health Organization, 132 000 melanoma incidences have been reported globally each year. 1 Alarmingly, Australia followed by New Zealand was reported to have the highest rate of melanoma in 2018. 2 In Australia, cutaneous melanoma is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women aged between 15 and 39 years old. 3 Risk factors include prolonged exposure to the ultraviolet radiation from the sun causing sun burn, indoor tanning, personal and/or family history of melanoma and the phenotypic characteristic of fair skin. 4,5 If detected early in a localised state, melanoma is treatable by local excision; however, it can metastasise rapidly and become life threatening. 5 The case below describes an imaging journey of a patient who was diagnosed with a spindle cell melanoma in her arm, and the role ultrasound can play in the diagnosis.
