Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a critical risk factor for suicidal ideation and attempts, especially among gay and bisexual men who experience living as a minority. However, whether internalized homophobia (IH) underlies suicide risk and the role of outness to one’s family in this association warrants investigation to inform preventive interventions. Using a cross-sectional survey of 570 gay and bisexual men in China, we examined the relationship between CSA and suicidality in the Chinese context and tested a moderated mediation model in this relationship. Nearly 65.6% of the participants had experienced suicidal ideation and 36.8% had attempted suicide. Participants with a history of CSA had higher suicidal ideation ( r = 0.33, p < .01) and attempts ( r = 0.48, p < .01). Our bootstrapped mediation analysis showed that IH partially mediated the relationship between CSA and suicidal ideation and attempts. Moreover, outness to one’s family (parents and other family members) strengthened the direct association of CSA and IH, and the indirect relationship between CSA and suicidal ideation and attempts. These findings highlight the significance of identifying risk factors and mechanisms for suicidality among Chinese gay and bisexual men, suggesting the importance of early intervention, especially for those who have experienced CSA, to eliminate their IH and to improve family support for coming out to prevent the onset of suicidal ideation and attempts.

We report qualitative findings of our Men’s Violence Gender and Health Study, a multiple method study using a sequential design in which we explored the mental health manifestations of cumulative lifetime violence in men. Survey results revealed that higher cumulative lifetime violence scores were significantly associated with higher scores on depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety in a community sample of men ( n = 685) living in Eastern Canada. To obtain a deeper understanding of men’s scores, we used an interpretive description approach to analyze data derived from 32 participant interviews. The main mental health manifestation of cumulative lifetime violence is perceptual interference, a sense of being disconnected or detached from others. This is managed by rectifying detachment, a process that includes efforts to gain connections with others. Findings suggest mental health needs in men with cumulative lifetime violence contradict gender role expectations to be stoic. Implications for nurses are explored.

Les cognitions post-traumatiques exerceraient une influence sur le traitement du trouble de stress post-traumatique (TSPT) chez les personnes ayant vécu une agression sexuelle (AS). À notre connaissance, aucune recension de la littérature n’a été effectuée sur la relation entre les cognitions post-traumatiques, le blâme de soi et le TSPT chez les personnes ayant vécu une AS. Considérant que ces cognitions sont fréquemment observées chez cette population, la présente étude vise à brosser un portrait général de la littérature pour comprendre ces relations. Vingt-neuf articles publiés entre 2010 et 2021 ont été trouvés dans les bases de données PsycINFO et PUBMED. Trois constats se dégagent de cette recension. D’abord, les cognitions post-traumatiques prédisent la sévérité des symptômes du TSPT et médient la relation entre ces symptômes et la présence de nombreuses problématiques en lien avec la survenue d’une AS. De plus, le blâme de soi prédit les symptômes du TSPT après une AS et médie la relation entre ces deux éléments. Cela dit, il serait pertinent de cibler les cognitions post-traumatiques dans le traitement du TSPT puisque leur diminution pourrait entraîner une diminution des symptômes du TSPT.
