Postsynaptic Potentials and Spike Patterns during Augmenting Responses in Cat's Motor Cortex

Abstract: Intracellular recordings and electroencephalograms were obtained from neurons of the motor cortex during augmnenting responses elicited by repetitive stimulation of its specific thalamic nucleus. The postsynaptic potentials during fully developed augmenting responses consistedf two depolarizing waves with two separate groups of spike dicharges of different latencies, the bases of the spikes, the so-called "firing-levels," sometimes shifting. This supports the concept that the postsynaptic potentials accompanyi… Show more

“…Upon repetitive stimulation of specific or nonspecific thalamic nuclei, an augmenting or recruiting response, respectively, could be recorded from the cortical surface (10,11). Intracellular recordings re-608 B. SUTOR AND J. J. HABLITZ vealed significant changes in the EPSP amplitude and duration (20,22,35,36). The augmenting response, evoked by repetitive stimulation of the nucleus ventralis lateralis, was associated with the appearance of a delayed second EPSP (22).…”

But, some superficial or middle layer cells have also been examined recently (NoDA et al, 1983;NODA and YAMAMOTO, 1984).…”

“…A form of the superficial T-C response is the recruiting response as mentioned previously. Suggestions have also been made by some authors that the augmenting response might contain in itself an identical component with the recruiting response (BISHOP et al, 1961 ;KLEE and OFFENLOCH, 1964).…”

“…Various attempts have been made to characterize more clearly the responses. Studies with intracellular recordings from cortical neurones have elucidated some changes in membrane potentials concomitant with the responses recorded with gross electrodes (Li, 1963 ;KLEE and OFFENLOCH, 1964;PURPURA and SHOFER, 1964;NACIMIENTO et al, 1964;CREUTZFELDT et al, 1966). However, more decisive characterization of the responses was successfully attained by means of laminar field potential recordings (LI et al, 1956;SPENCER and BROOKHART, 1961;SASAKI et al, 1970).…”
