Background Canine cutaneous perivascular wall tumors (c‐PWT) are soft tissue sarcomas recently identified when hemangiopericytomas were reclassified. No previous clinical data are available for c‐PWT. Hypothesis/Objectives To define the clinical behavior and prognostic role of clinical and pathological variables in a homogeneous population of c‐PWT. Animals Fifty‐five c‐PWT in 53 client‐owned dogs at first presentation undergoing surgery. Methods Retrospective case series. The endpoint was the relapse of tumor (local and/or distant). The prognostic values of clinical (age, sex, weight, site and tumor size, adjuvant therapy) and pathological (status of surgical margins, histological grade, mitosis, percentage of tumor necrosis) variables were investigated by univariate and bivariate analyses (P < .05). The pattern of associations between variables was explored by multivariate correspondence analysis (MCA). Results Twelve dogs had a relapse. Ten dogs had local recurrence, 1 had metastatic disease, and 1 had both. The estimated probability of local recurrence was 0.02, 0.08, 0.20, and 0.24 at 6 months, 1, 2, and 3 years, respectively. Size of the tumor was a significant prognostic factor while status of margins had only a clinically relevant hazard ratio. In MCA evaluation, young age, tumor size (< 5 cm), grade I, and location in the extremities were associated. Association was also observed for older age, tumor size (> 5 cm), grade II, and other location. Conclusion and Clinical Importance C‐PWT tend to locally recur a long time after surgery. An early diagnosis of c‐PWT associated with small tumor size (< 5 cm) and clean surgical margins ensures a good prognosis independently of histological grade.

Acanthomatous ameloblastoma (AA) is a benign gingival tumour that often invades bone. This retrospective study evaluated the efficacy of intralesional (IL) bleomycin as a treatment for AA. Six dogs received weekly or bimonthly IL bleomycin injections (dose range, 10-20 U m −2 ). A seventh dog presented with advanced, nonresectable AA was treated palliatively. One to sixteen treatments were administered (median, 5). Six of the seven dogs had a complete response within 4 months from initial IL injection (median, 1.5 months), whereas the palliative case had approximately 25% decrease in tumour volume 14 days from initial injection. Local recurrence was not observed during the study period, with a median follow-up time of 842 days. Adverse effects were limited to wound formation with bone exposure (n = 4), mild tissue reactions (n = 3), local swelling (n = 2) and local infection (n = 1). The conclusions of this study show IL bleomycin is an effective treatment for canines with AA.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is used in combination chemotherapy protocols for human head and neck cancer and other epithelial neoplasms. However, a paucity of literature describing use of this drug in veterinary oncology exists, likely due to previous reports of fatal neurotoxicity in both dogs and cats, mainly due to ingestion of human creams. The primary aim of this retrospective study was to report the safety of concurrent 5-FU and carboplatin in canine carcinomas. Secondarily, we aimed to look at the efficacy of the combination using overall response rate in treated dogs. Medical records were searched from 2007 to 2017 for dogs treated with both agents; 24 dogs met inclusion criteria. Carboplatin dosages ranged from 180 to 250 mg/m (median 200 mg/m ); 5-FU dosage was 150 mg/m . Fourteen dogs had myelosuppression, ranging from Grade I to asymptomatic Grade IV; thrombocytopenia was more common than neutropenia. Gastrointestinal upset was uncommon, with only seven dogs having Grade I or II nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. No cases were hospitalized for any of the above toxicities. One dog had an episode of ataxia, which could not be differentiated between otitis and 5-FU neurotoxicity. This protocol is well tolerated. Response rate in the gross disease setting was 43% (three complete responses, three partial responses). Prospective analysis of this combination protocol, and potentially 5-FU with other platinum agents, is warranted in the treatment of canine carcinomas.
