“…Without prophylaxis after TKA, the overall incidence of deep-venous thrombosis (DVT) is between 40% and 84%, with proximal thrombosis being observed in 8% to 24% of patients. 2,3,[7][8][9]11,14,[17][18][19][20]22,[24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39] Propagation of calf thrombosis to more proximal thrombi has been demonstrated by Doouss 4 and Kakkar et al, 26 and most recently by Grady-Benson et al 8 who used serial venous Dopper flow measurements to document a propagation rate of 24% in the calf. Therefore prophylaxis after TKA is essential to prevent thromboembolic disease.…”
