Postoperative Pain after Foraminal Instrumentation with a Reciprocating System and Different Irrigating Solutions

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare postoperative pain after foraminal instrumentation using 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) gel irrigation protocol in nonvital single-rooted teeth after reciprocating instrumentation. Sixty-two volunteers presenting a single root canal diagnosed with asymptomatic necrosis and apical periodontitis were randomized into 2 experimental groups regarding the irrigation protocol (ie, 5.25% NaOCl and 2% CHX gel groups). Endodontic treat… Show more

“…Many clinical trials investigated postoperative pain after the completion of root canal treatment in one visit (Gondim et al 2010, Silva et al 2015. However, in some studies, the interappointment postoperative pain was investigated to eliminate pain following the root filling originating from overfilling or extrusion of sealer (Glennon et al 2004, Ramamoorthi et al 2014.…”

“…This decrease in bacterial count could have contributed to reduction in inflammation and pain intensity . Sodium hypochlorite used as a root canal irrigant to help reduce post‐operative pain is supported in the literature with reasons being either due to the decrease in bacterial population or that it has better tissue dissolving capability .…”

“…As mentioned earlier, the role played by irrigant solutions on post‐operative pain is inconclusive . However, there are studies which point to a reduction in post‐operative pain by using different strengths and types of irrigating solutions . To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are no studies evaluating the use of NSAIDs as root canal irrigating solutions and their efficacy in single‐visit root canal treatment for teeth with irreversible pulpitis.…”

“…Patients may experience discomfort and pain following root canal treatment (Pak & White 2011). Several variables are associated with this outcome, including factors related to root canal irrigation (da Silva et al 2015). Various methods are described to evaluate the intensity of postoperative pain (Ferreira-Valente et al 2011).…”
