Postoperative nausea and vomiting prophylaxis: A comparative study of ondansetron, granisetron and granisetron and dexamethasone combination after modified radical mastectomy

Abstract: Background:Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is commonly seen after modified radical mastectomy (MRM). In this randomized double-blind prospective study we compared the efficacy of ondansetron, granisetron and granisetron and dexamethasone combination for prevention of PONV following MRM in female patients.Materials and Methods:A total of 75 patients (20-60 years of age) undergoing elective MRM were randomly allocated to one of the three groups of 25 patients each. Group O received ondansetron 4 mg, Gr… Show more

“…21 Anti-emetics are very important for preventing post-operative nausea and vomiting especially in cases where general anesthesia is administered. 22 In most of the other studies, anti anxiety drugs were most commonly used, like study done by Venkitachalam et al in 2018, where midazolam was used in 100% of cases. 21 However, as per study done by Kulkarni et al in 2017, only 10.9% received anti-anxiety drugs and that too midazolam was most commonly used similar to our study.…”

“…Different doses of drugs are one of the major reasons for variable results, as Riad and Marouf [ 15 ] have used granisetron at a dose of 10 mcg/kg and dexamethasone at 500 mcg/kg after pediatric strabismus surgery which is different from the doses used in the present study (granisetron at 40 mcg/kg and dexamethasone at 150 mcg/kg). Gupta and Jain used granisetron at a dose of 40 mcg/kg for PONV prophylaxis after breast cancer surgery [ 16 ]. Dexamethasone has also been used at different doses (50 mcg/kg–1 mg/kg) for PONV prophylaxis and variable results were found [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…Postoperative nausea and vomiting is one of the most distressing experiences associated with surgery 1 and is known to be the second most common complaint in the postoperative period after pain. 2 The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting without any prophylaxis ranges from 20-30% 2 which increases to 41-88.0% in high risk surgeries like strabismus, 3 laparoscopic, 4 breast 5 and middle ear surgery.…”
