Postoperative Imaging of the Ankle

Abstract: Surgical interventions in the ankle are becoming more prevalent with increasing athletic demands and emerging focus on techniques for prevention of joint injury. Knowledge of the surgical techniques, imaging appearances, and complications in the postoperative ankle is necessary for the accurate diagnosis of postoperative complications and for optimal patient care.

“…[35][36][37][38] The tendon sheath is wrapped with suture to approximate the split tendon fibers and restore tendon integrity. 39 However, when < 50% healthy tendon remains, excision of the damaged tendon can be attempted, and the healthy proximal and distal stumps can be anchored to the adjacent remaining peroneal PL tendon. 16,37 Proximal tenodesis is typically done 3 to 4 cm above the tip of the lateral malleolus, with the distal tenodesis 5 to 6 cm below the tip of the lateral malleolus to avoid fibular impingement.…”

“…Different appearances depending on the technique can be seen on postoperative imaging. 39 In case of FDL tendon transfer, the distal attachment is variable, depending on the integrity of the plantar slip of the PT tendon. If this latter is normal, the FDL is sutured directly to the distal PTT.…”
