Postoperative changes in sacropelvic junction in short-segment angular kyphosis versus Scheuermann kyphosis

Abstract: The results of this study suggest that a significant sacropelvic improvement can be achieved by balanced sagittal vertical axis and T1 spinopelvic leading to a good sagittal alignment of spine in patients with AK and SK. Changes seen in morphological parameters after surgery may be closely related with baseline biomechanics and structure of the spine and pelvis. Therefore, further clinical and scientific trials are necessary both to elucidate the biomechanics, their clinical implications, and to develop new te… Show more

“…19 The postoperative SB is an important predictor of functional results when depicting the muscular forces acting on the spine and the associated energy spent. 20 In the present study, the mean values of the SB remained within the normal range before and after surgery, which was also described by Guler et al 21 after surgical correction of SK. In the postoperative period, the mean values of the pelvic parameters were of 50°for PI, 16°for PT, and 35°for SS.…”

“…19 O SB pós-operatório é um importante preditor de resultados funcionais ao retratar as forças musculares que agem na coluna vertebral e a energia associada gasta. 20 Neste estudo, os valores médios do SB permaneceram dentro da faixa normal antes e depois da cirurgia, que também foi descrita por Guler et al 21 após a correção cirúrgica da SK.…”

“…However, we did not evaluate the correlation between SSPs within themselves. On the other hand, in the study of Guler et al (9) they evaluated the angular and SK patients in terms of SPPs changes after surgical treatment. Although there were no significant differences between preoperative and postoperative values in angular kyphosis group, different from the above-mentioned studies there were statistically significant differences in terms of SS and PT but not in PI.…”

“…The management of SK includes both conservative treatment, most commonly with antigravity plaster casts or the Milwaukee brace (MB), and surgical options [4,6,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]; the patient's age and the severity of the deformity are the main factors to be taken into account when choosing the management strategy [2,16]. Bracing is currently the mainstay of treatment for SK, particularly before skeletal maturity and for less severe curves, since it has revealed effective in slowing or halting curve progression [2,[16][17][18][19].…”
