Postoperative Care of Patients Undergoing Same‐Day Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Abstract: Elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies are common outpatient surgical procedures. After briefly discussing cholecystectomy and its indications, best practices in phase I, phase II, and phase III recovery are discussed. Typical pharmaceutical regimens for controlling pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting are summarized. By implementing best practices, nurses can prevent and recognize complications. The criteria for discharge, extended recovery, and inpatient admission are discussed, along with the require… Show more

“…In current surgical practices, high incidences of PONV up to 53-72% have been reported with laparoscopic cholecystectomy. 15 Although it was widely investigated in the last two decades, but we are still unable to find effective treatment for prevention of PONV. The modern medicine is now looking for alternate ways of reducing this postoperative complication.…”

“…13,14 Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most common procedures performed worldwide in general surgery. 15 While it is a fairly simple procedure with minimal risk of infection as compared to laparotomy, there is a high risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting due to the surgical technique involved, type of anesthesia used, and prior risk factors of the patients.…”

“…The database search on the efficacy of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in acute episodes of cholecystitis yielded 47 articles. Upon further analysis, only five articles focused on the efficacy of tube cholecystostomy in high-risk groups as an emergency procedure for settling acute cholecystitis (11,12). While laparoscopic cholecystectomy remains the gold standard for treating acute cholecystitis, its application in high-risk elderly patients with multiple comorbidities classified as ASA 3 or 4 should be carefully considered.…”
