Postoperative analgesic effects of epidural administration of neostigmine alone or in combination with morphine in ovariohysterectomized dogs

Abstract: Epidurally administered neostigmine reduced the use of supplemental analgesia after ovariohysterectomy in dogs. However, analgesic effects were less pronounced than for epidurally administered morphine or morphine-neostigmine. Adding neostigmine to epidurally administered morphine did not potentiate opioid-induced analgesia.

“…Although other canine pain studies have validated the pain VAS [44], [45], different treatment effects on mean VAS scores following trochleoplasty were not demonstrated in this study. The VAS might have provided systematic error, particularly when measuring pain at baseline (floor effect) and during the postoperative period (ceiling effect).…”

“…The dogs with fractures had an average CMPS-SF score of ≥5/20 and OP-VAS over 40 mm, which, according to what has previously been reported, indicates pain and the need for additional analgesic treatment [11, 54]. Surprisingly, the S-VAS scores measured during collection of saliva and blood samples were significantly lower in dogs with traumatic bone fractures compared to the healthy dogs.…”

“…The level of pain may have been underestimated because of the sedative effect of morphine affecting some of the parameters [54, 55]. However, despite receiving morphine analgesia, the subjective pain assessment scores were still higher in dogs with fractures than in the healthy dogs, indicating a suboptimal analgesic effect.…”
