Postoccupancy Evaluation of a Neighborhood Concept Redesign of an Acute Care Nursing Unit in a Planetree Hospital

Abstract: Objective: A comparative study was undertaken to survey nurses working in an acute care nursing unit before and after moving to a new hospital to investigate the impact of a nursing unit designed utilizing Planetree build criteria. Background: The physical and emotional demands of frontline practitioners is a serious concern for patient safety and staff retention as the environmental design of nursing units can influence human errors from fatigue and interruption. Method: A pre-move survey was conducted with a… Show more

“…If no one answers, they ask their colleagues to confirm the location of the doctor they are looking for and then walk to speak with the doctor face to face. Although communication between healthcare professionals can be influenced by individual personalities (Holmes et al, 2020; Terry & Newham, 2020), communication patterns could also be influenced by the physical environment in healthcare settings (Naccarella et al, 2019; O’Hara et al, 2018; Rose et al, 2022; Xuan et al, 2020). It is of great significance to improve communication effectiveness between nurses and medical teams by optimizing spatial layouts and improving sound environments to improve the efficiency and satisfaction of nursing work.…”

“…While our newly constructed patient rooms among all units and floors were developed as single patient rooms, 11 leadership decided it was best to double room occupancy among two of our general medical floors to ensure that proper isolation and bed availability were achieved via the use of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 care zones. These procedures and novel workflow changes have been cited in the literature as best practices and strategies implemented internationally, [12][13][14] although taking place at large medical centers with additional resources and organizational surge capacity.…”

“…To establish the spatial equilibrium of medical facilities, it is important to systematically assess the current spatial service condition of hospital buildings, establish reasonable assumptions, and find key elements [5]. Overall, the existing literature on the assessment of spatial balance in healthcare facilities involves three disciplines: architecture, urban planning, and public health [6][7][8].…”

“…For example, Rose, SJ et al ( 2022) have used the Post-occupancy Evaluation method for evaluation of the use of nurses in an acute care nursing unit before and after relocation to a new hospital. The survey questions included work efficiency and productivity, the design of the patient room and support spaces, information systems, and environmental conditions [8]. Nimlyat, PS et al (2018) have studied indoor environmental quality (IEQ), methods of comparison through subjective or objective assessment, and the internal environment of buildings in a way that was related to health, comfort, and well-being [11].…”
