Postnatal evaluation of intrauterine hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction

Abstract: PURPOSE:Fetal hydronephrosis is a frequent finding due to advances in prenatal ultrasonography. The definition of fetal and neonatal urinary tract obstruction is a very difficult task requiring confirmation of reduced renal function and hydronephrosis. In this study we followed a series of consecutive patients with intrauterine hydronephrosis that persisted during post-natal life. METHODS:116 newborns with antenatal hydronephrosis diagnosed by ultrasound and submitted to a specific post-natal evaluative protoc… Show more

“…Nowadays most cases of UPJ obstruction are suspected during pregnancy due to the recent widespread use of ultrasonography in the antenatal period, especially after the 28th week when it is most accurate to study the urogenital tract [1,5]. After labor, in case of suspicion of UPJ obstruction, is highly recommended close surveillance of the newborn by clinical examination, US and renography with MAG3.…”

“…After labor, in case of suspicion of UPJ obstruction, is highly recommended close surveillance of the newborn by clinical examination, US and renography with MAG3. Detection of impairment or decrease in split renal function, increase in the antero-posterior diameter, recurrent renal infection and flank pain are the most common indications for surgical treatment [1,5].…”

“…Prenatal hydronephrosis (PNH) is the most common cause of kidney and urinary tract abnormality in perinatal period by a prevalence of 1% to 5% of pregnancies ( 1 - 4 ). Diagnosis of PNH is based on renal ultrasonography (US) before and/or after birth.…”
