Documentation of normal growth in late adolescence has been limited to a few studies using largely white participants. Annual growth rates of 668 high school girls who had already achieved menarche were determined for stature, sitting height, and knee height measured using the Knee Height Measuring Device (KHMD), an instrument with superior reliability. The sample was 61.4% white, 16.8% Puerto Rican, 15.7% African American, and 6.1% girls of other ethnic backgrounds. Median growth rate was 1.5 cm/year for stature, 1.1 cm/year for sitting height, and 2.7 mm/year for knee height in the first full year after menarche, and >80% of all girls grew in at least one dimension. Growth in stature (≥1 cm) continued for 64% of girls 1 full year after menarche and for 31% of girls 2 years after menarche, and growth in knee height (≥1 mm) continued in >45% of girls up to 5 completed years past menarche. Whites, African Americans, and Puerto Ricans showed small but significant differences in amounts of postmenarcheal growth in the dimensions measured. African‐American girls grew less in stature and sitting height than other groups, whereas Puerto Rican girls grew significantly more in sitting height and significantly less in knee height than other ethnic groups. These findings demonstrate that, as documented in other studies of postmenarcheal growth, there is substantial growth after menarche in most girls. The most sensitive measures indicate that small amounts of growth persist >5 years after menarche. Appreciation of this phenomenon needs to be communicated to clinicians who generally assume that growth ceases at/or just after menarche. © 1996 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

The effect of oestrogen on muscle development was determined in 8 muscles (biceps brachii, triceps brachii, common digital extensor, soleus, superficial digital flexor, cranial tibialis, gastrocnemius and long digital extensor muscles of sexually immature male and female mice. Each mouse was killed at a mature age of 16 weeks. The muscle development as determined by increase in muscle weight was significantly smaller in muscles of oestrogen-treated male and oestrogen-treated female mice as compared to the muscles of normal male and normal female mice. The muscles of normal male mice were very significantly larger than those of normal female mice. There was, on the other hand, no significant difference between the muscle mass of oestrogen-treated male and oestrogen-treated female mice. This indicated that the smaller muscle mass of normal female mice when compared to normal male mice was connected with inhibitory effect of oestrogen on the muscle development of female mice.

The purpose of this paper was to assess post-menarcheal growth in a cohort of Brazilian girls and correlate it with the age, stature and BMI at menarche. Records of the age, weight, and stature at menarche, and 5 years later, of 111 girls who attended the Adolescent Unit of the Child Institute-HC-Medical School of the University of São Paulo, were recovered. The median age at menarche was 12.67 years and the mean increase in height was 7.54 +/- 3.35 cm. The largest span of growth was observed in girls who reached menarche before 12.67 years (r= -0.46; p= 0.0001) and in the ones who had less stature at this moment (r= -0.44; p= 0.0001). The best correlation was observed in girls with stature between p25 and p75 of NCHS reference data (r= -0.72; p= 0.0001). Adolescents with greater BMI had earlier menarche (11.9 years). No correlation was found between BMI and post-menarcheal growth (r= 0). In this cohort, post-menarcheal growth was similar to other studies and correlations offer information to assess the potential of growth after menarche.
