Postharvest intermittent heat treatment alleviates chilling injury in cold‐stored sweet potato roots through the antioxidant metabolism regulation

Abstract: The effects of intermittent heat treatment (HT) on chilling injury (CI) and antioxidant capacity of sweet potato roots were investigated during cold storage at 5 ± 0.5ºC and 80%–85% relative humidity. Roots were heat treated in an air oven (45ºC) for 3 hr continuously (HT45) or intermittently (I‐HT45). Intermittent treatment was achieved through the temperature recovery by room temperature after every 1 hr of continuous treatment. Results indicate that both continuous and intermittent HTs maintained the root q… Show more

“…Antioxidant enzymes are essential components of the cellular defense system. They balance intercellular radicals producing and scavenging molecules in the plants subjected to oxidative stress (Wang et al, 2016;Yao et al, 2018;Zhou et al, 2006) (Pan, Chen, et al, 2019).…”

“…In this study, we used fluorescence (F) intensity and electrolyte leakage (EL) to indicate membrane fluidity and permeability and to judge the membrane stability and integrity (Pan et al, 2019; Song et al, 2016). F intensity of 1‐anilinonaphthalene‐8‐sulfonate (ANS) depends on membrane surface charge and the degree of lipid disorder, which will decrease when the nonpolar benzene ring of ANS binds to the polar region of the membrane lipid (Shivaji, 1986).…”

“…Intermittent treatment was achieved by letting the temperature revert to room temperature after every 1 h of continuous treatment. This intermittent heat treatment was found to be a safe, physical method for preserving the root quality at a low temperature, by increasing antioxidant metabolism to alleviate oxidative damage [37].…”
