Postglacial palaeoclimatic changes in Scandinavia and Central Europe. A tentative correlation based on studies of lake level fluctuations

Show more

“…Starkel (1991) also highlights a reduction in the water discharge of the Upper Vistula in Poland during this period. The data synthesized by Gaillard (1985) support the idea that this lowering phase is a widespread European phenomenon. It marks the climatic warming that developed after the YD and that lead for instance, to the retreat of the glaciers in the Alps.…”

“…During recent decades studies of past lake-level fluctuations have proved useful in Holocene palaeohydrological reconstruction (Street-Perrott & Harrison 1985;Gaillard 1985;Digerfeldt 1988;Harrison et al 1991). The Jurd Mountains with their numerous lakes offer an exceptional investigation area for such palaeoclimatic studies.…”

“…Street & Grove (1979), Street-Perrott & Harrison (1985), and Harrison & Metcalfe (1985a, b) have demonstrated the valuable information which can be obtained from interpretation of paleohydrological records at a continental scale. Gaillard (1985) has presented a tentative correlation of Holocene lake-level fluctuations in Scandinavia and some countries in central Europe. Within the compass of IGCP 158, Harrison (1987) has recently begun a compilation and interpretation of paleohydrological records at a European continental scale.…”

“…This is confirmed by a large number of different palaeoclimatic records from various sites (e.g. Overbeck 1975;Berglund 1983;Magny 1993;Saarse 1990), particularly by lake level reconstructions from Poland, Switzerland, southern Germany, northern Italy, and Great Britain (summarized by Gaillard 1985). Implications for low lake-level stands around 3000 cal.…”
