Postglacial genetic differentiation of reproductive ecotypes of kokanee Oncorhynchus nerka in Okanagan Lake, British Columbia

Abstract: Okanagan Lake, south-central interior of BC, contains two reproductive ecotypes of kokanee Oncorhynchus nerka; individuals spawn in tributary streams ('stream-spawners') as well as on shoreline gravel areas ('beach-spawners'). We tested the hypothesis that these sympatric ecotypes comprise a single panmictic population by assaying variation in morphological traits and at allozyme, mitochondrial and minisatellite DNA loci in fish collected from three stream-spawning and two beach-spawning sites. No morphologica… Show more

“…The substitution rate was constrained to the extent of 0.5-0.9% divergence per site per million year for freshwater fish mtDNA genes (Martin and Palumbi, 1993;Taylor et al, 1997;Waters and Burridge, 1999;Zardoya and Doadrio, 1999). Two independent runs were performed with 2 Â 10 7 MCMC iterations.…”

“…This general approach has been applied to different vertebrate organisms including mammals (Melnick and Hoelzer, 1992;Baker et al, 1998;Seielstad et al, 1998;Pérez-Lezaun et al, 1999;Mesa et al, 2000;Escorza-Trevino and Dizon, 2000), birds (Guttierez, 1994;Gibbs et al, 2000;Piertney et al, 2000), reptiles (Karl et al, 1992;FitzSimmons et al, 1997;Rassmann et al, 1997) and fishes (Ferguson et al, 1993;Taylor et al, 1997;Patton et al, 1997). These different studies have employed several kinds of uni-parentally inherited markers (eg mtDNA, Ylinked markers).…”

“…Several studies have recently shown that different ecotypes of fishes have experienced rapid genetic divergence and are, in many cases, on the brink of speciation (eg, Taylor et al, 1997;Market et al, 1999). Significant genetic divergence has also been observed between estuarine and nearby marine populations in the silverside fish Odontesthes argentinensis and the authors assume that the colonization of estuarine habitats seems to have promoted rapid adaptive divergence and reproductive isolation in estuarine populations, which were considered as incipient ecological species (Beheregaray and Levy, 2000;Beheregaray and Sunnucks, 2001).…”
