“…In 1986, Brambilla and colleagues [10] stated in their review that only 157 cases of EDH located in the posterior cranial fossa had been recorded since 1901. Thus PFEDH make up between 1.2 and 15.0 % of all epidural haematomas [3,5,6,10,16,18,24,32,34,37,39,41,43,45,49,52,56,60,63] . However, some reports showed a more frequent occurrence of PFEDH (from 41 to 55 % of all reviewed cases) in children and adolescents [10,41,43,49,53] .…”

“…Rarely, EDHs have occurred in other locations e. g. in the frontal, parietal, occipital, vertex or posterior fossa regions [4,7,11,19,21,26,35,47,54] . An overall lower incidence of posterior fossa injuries, and the rarity of EDHs located in the posterior cranial fossa (PFEDH) has made the diagnosis and treatment of this condition more challenging [24,49,52,63] . Owing to the rarity of PFEDHs and their association with rapid deterioration and a potentially lethal outcome from brainstem compression, we decided to report on our experience with 24 such cases.…”

“…Prognosis became better with the introduction of the CT-scan. But there are only a few series with a total number of 52 cases of EDHPF published so far, in which diagnosis was made by means of the CT-scan ~, 4, 5, 1 l, 13,26,30,32,33 Patients and Methods Between 1975 and1986 in the Department of Neurological Surgery of the university of Erlangen (FRG) we have collected 18 consecutive cases of EDHPF, all diagnosed by the CT-scan, among a total number of 521 EDH (3.4%). The clinical findings will be presented and the main factors responsible for the mortality will be discussed.…”

“…1,7,13,19,22 They are, however, the most common traumatic space-occupying lesions of the posterior fossa 18 and are a serious complication secondary to head injury. Clinically, symptoms may be silent and slow, but the associated deterioration is often sudden and quick becoming fatal if not promptly treated.…”
