Poster: Smart networked bicycles with platoon cooperation

Abstract: Urban roads are venues of social interaction where many actors try to accomplish their transportation-related individual goals. It has been demonstrated that when individuals act with scarce contextual information they offer resistance to one another's programs of action hindering coordination. In this work we address the problem of smart networked bicycles assisting cyclist coordination. Coordination is based on vehicular communications together with a cooperative adaptive cruise control. We propose to combin… Show more

“…Cycling is a green and healthy style for short-distance movement, which has been studied in [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Eisenman et al [ 13 ] designed and implemented a mobile networked sensing system, called BikeNet, for cyclists to provide the healthiness of a given route, such as pollution levels, allergen levels, noise levels, and roughness of the terrain.…”

“…In addition, cyclists can estimate their calorie expenditure during a riding trip and keep tracking their physical exercises. Cespedes et al [ 16 ] investigated cyclist platoon cooperation for traveling at a necessary speed to arrive at the destination in a given time and maintaining a proper distance with the bicycle in front.…”

“…This is definitely not practical especially when cycling. Cespedes et al proposed in [13] a dedicated networking system that can only be used by cyclists forming a group to cooperate with each other and find coordination. No public network access is introduced which makes the system dedicated for certain applications.…”
