Postdischarge growth assessment in very low birth weight infants

Abstract: PurposeThe goal of nutritional support for very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants from birth to term is to match the in utero growth rates; however, this is rarely achieved.MethodsWe evaluated postdischarge growth patterns and growth failure in 81 Korean VLBW infants through a retrospective study. Weight and height were measured and calculated based on age percentile distribution every 3 months until age 24 months. Growth failure was defined as weight and height below the 10th percentile at 24 months. For the su… Show more

“…Zhao et al [23] showed that SGA was associated with lower weight and length. The incidence of growth failure in our report was lower than that reported in developing countries [17, 19, 20]. VLBW and SGA preterm infants benefit from improvements in nutritional support and routine follow-up.…”

“…Correspondingly, the incidences of stunting and microcephaly were higher in the VLBW and SGA preterm infant groups. Previous studies have shown that the growth failure rate among VLBW infants is as high as 50% at 12 months of CA [17, 19, 20]. For SGA preterm infants, Knops et al [21] found that very preterm AGA infants showed no stunting at 10 years of age; however, many SGA children showed persistent stunting.…”

“…Likewise, growth failure has been defined as weight and height below the 10th percentile at 24 months using fetal growth charts in another study. 17) We defined catch-up growth as growth parameter over 10th percentile of normal Korean infant's growth curve. Approximately 10%–25% of children born SGA fail to show catch-up growth and remain short as adults.…”

“…In 2016, Gri n et al [7] analyzed the data of the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative from 2005 to 2012 and found that the incidence of EUGR at discharge of very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) was 52.7% and 44.4% in the 1000-1249 g and 1250-1500 g groups, respectively. In 2017, Park et al [8] reported that at 40 weeks of corrected gestational age, the incidence of EUGR was 58.4% by the weight and 50.5% by the height. In China, the incidence of EUGR was higher.…”
