Postanesthetic ulceration of palate: A rare complication

Abstract: The routine dental practice involves various dental procedures which needs the application of local anesthetics. Generally, there are very few complications associated with these procedures. Complications such as tissue necrosis can occur following the rapid injection of local anesthetic solutions. Palate is a favorable site for soft tissue lesions, various factors such as direct effects of the drug, blanching of the tissues during injection, a relatively poor blood supply, and reactivation of the latent forms… Show more

“…Local anesthetics can determine a partial ischemia due to their vasoconstrictive effect that determine a reduced blood supply to tissues. 6 Ischemia of the glans after circumcision is a rare event; partial necrosis of the glans has been described in the literature as an effect of DPNB with several types of local anesthetics, 7 like ropivacaine and lidocaine, mostly when containing vasoconstrictor as ephedrine or epinephrine.…”

“…One of the factors that trigger the development of necrosis is the content of local anesthetic agents. Especially local anesthetic drugs containing vasoconstrictor agent reduce our blood flow to the tissue and may cause ischemia [26]. The circumcision operation is performed under local anesthesia by dorsal nerve blockage.…”
