Post-weld-shift in butterfly package

Abstract: We present a novel image acquisition system to measure the post-weld-shift(PWS) in butterfly package for laser diode module. The results show that the measurements of PWS were l.7pm and 4.7 pm in X and Z-axis, respectively. This, indicates that the domination of PWS of the fiber in butterfly package is along z-axis.

“…Hsu et al [10] used four geometrical parameters to define the PWS for TO-Can-type laser modules and FEM simulation was performed to evaluate the PWS induced by laser welding. A few authors also made efforts to measure the PWS with micro displacement sensors such as eddy current sensor [14], High magnification CCD [15], laser displacement meter [16], [18]. Despite so many studies mentioned above on laser welding and PWS, simulation and experiment researches focused on laser hammering are very limited.…”

“…The nonlinear strain-displacement definition is used (6) where is strain tensor, denotes displacement vector. The total structure strain in a thermal stress problem is composed of elastic, thermal, and plastic components as (7) where is elastic strain, denotes thermal strain, refers to plastic strain.…”

“…Effectively controlling WIAD to maintain high coupling efficiency is obviously the most challenging issue in assembling of fiber-optic components using laser welding. WIAD or PWS has becoming an area of growing interest to researchers [6]- [11], and finite-element method (FEM) has been employed to predict or at least estimate the amount of WIAD that will occur. The factors that influence WIAD are various.…”
