Countries in the Western Balkans have engaged in various transitional justice and reconciliation initiatives to address the legacy of the wars of the 1990s and the deep political and societal divisions that persist. There is growing consensus among scholars and practitioners that in order to foster meaningful change, transitional justice must extend beyond trials (the dominant international mechanism in the region) and be more firmly anchored in affected communities with alternative sites, safe spaces, and modes of engagement. This rapid literature review presents a sample of initiatives, spanning a range of sectors and fields – truth-telling, art and culture, memorialisation, dialogue and education – that have achieved a level of success in contributing to processes of reconciliation, most frequently at the community level. It draws primarily from recent studies, published in the past five years. Much of the literature available centres on Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), with some examples also drawn from Serbia, Kosovo and North Macedonia.

“…The Case of the Church of the Holy Virgin of Levisha/ Ljeviša in the Historic Center of Prizren During this period (2004-2021), the socio-political dynamics (in Kosovo) on the ground changed, which also affected cultural heritage conservation. After the declaration of independence in 2008, 44 heritage sites, mainly orthodox churches and monasteries of the SOC in Kosovo, as well as the historic urban core of Prizren, were granted a legal conservation and protection status through the establishment of (special) protective zones (Hisari & Fouseki, 2020). The zones are also included in strategic documents such as Kosovo's Spatial Plan 2010-2020+ and National Strategy for Cultural Heritage 2017-2027.…”

It is widely acknowledged that reconciliation and sustainable development are processes that necessitate involvement from local, national and international actors. However, with the attention of international actors overwhelmingly focused on World Heritage sites, this chapter seeks to examine the potential consequences of the disparity in treatment between those sites on the World Heritage List and those that are not but are still significant for their local communities. Kosovo and Iraq are the two cases we use to explore the role, use and treatment of heritage in post-war recovery and reconciliation and how this is affected by World Heritage status. Through an examination of heritage as a political process, we can approach a more in-depth understanding of how heritage shapes and reshapes the politics of post-war memory, inter-community relations, and the extent to which the international community uses World Heritage in these communities to mandate their own politics of remembrance. We argue that heritage can have a “pacifying” role and contribute to peacebuilding, but this will need active, transformative actions from UNESCO which go beyond the Convention and, if possible, beyond politically influenced decision-making. This chapter seeks to fill a gap in the literature of how the local, national and international interact in the post-war environment, as well as the true impact of potential inequalities created by World Heritage.

War creates a bitter experience for human life. In fact, that bitter experience lasted until the war ended. This is represented through postwar literary works. This article aims to analyze the metaphors of postwar period romance in two literary works, Gribachov's "August Stars" and Utuy Tatang Sontani's "Early and Mira." The two authors are authors of different countries, but of the same name, romantic realism. This research method is qualitative with comparative literary studies. His results show that there are symbolic similarities to both stories. The metaphors used in both short stories are metaphors of distance or incarcing and metaphors of loss or disability. Both metaphors relate to war.In conclusion, a literary work with romantic realism is a literary work that displays bitter past events. Past experiences of war are displayed through metaphors. Loss or disability is displayedthrough the symbolic medium. Keyword: Gribacov,metaphor, postwar, romantic realism, Utuy Tatang Sontani. Abstrak Perang menciptakan pengalaman yang pahit bagi kehidupan manusia. Bahkan, pengalaman yang pahit itu bertahan hingga perang berakhir. Hal ini direpresentasikan melalui karya sastra pascaperang. Artikel ini bertujuan menganalisis metafora percintaan periode pascaperang pada dua karya sastra, yakni “August Stars” karya Gribachov dan “Awal dan Mira” karya Utuy Tatang Sontani. Kedua pengarang itu adalah pengarang yang berbeda negara, tetapi beraliran yang sama, yakni realisme romantik. Metode penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan studi sastra bandingan. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa terdapat kemiripan metafora pada kedua cerita tersebut. Metafora yang digunakan di kedua cerpen tersebut adalah metafora tentang keberjarakan atau keterpenjaraan dan metafora kehilangan atau kecacatan. Kedua metafora itu berhubungan dengan perang. Kesimpulannya, karya sastra beraliran realisme romantik adalah karya sastra yang menampilkan peristiwa masa lalu yang pahit. Pengalaman masa lalu tentang perang ditampilkan melalu metafora. Kehilangan atau kecacatan ditampilkan melalui medium metafora. Kata kunci: Gribacov, metafora, pascaperang, realisme romantic, Utuy Tatang Sontani.
