Post‐stroke visual midline shift syndrome

Abstract: The state of research on the topic of visual midline shift syndrome following a cerebrovascular accident is unknown. A scoping review was conducted using the search terms of 'visual midline shift' (or equivalent) and 'cerebrovascular accident' (or equivalent). Articles were selected from eight academic and one grey literature database, and went through two levels of review, as per Arksey and O'Malley, before being deemed acceptable for inclusion. Of the 931 abstracts reviewed, 27 articles met the criteria for … Show more

“…It seems essential for the patient to stay seated until the end of the mirror therapy, and to keep the trunk tilted to the unaffected side. If a patient willing to use mirror therapy is in a phase learning midline orientation, it can rather interrupt rehabilitation [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Midline orientation training is weighted in the early stage of stroke rehabilitation [ 18 ], and significant improvements in the activities of daily living (ADL) are expected at the same time.…”

“…Existem evidências do desvio da linha média pós acidente vascular encefálico. Não há, no entanto, consenso acerca da eficácia nos tratamentos propostos para esta condição através da aplicação dos prismas (LABRECHE et al, 2020).…”

“…TBI patients can also report disruption in their spatial localization especially in relation to their own body (Bansal et al, 2014 ). This is often referred to as Visual Perceptual Midline Shift Syndrome or Abnormal Egocentric Localization (Padula et al, 2017 ; Labreche et al, 2020 ) which may highlight the involvement of oculomotor and vestibulo-ocular systems. Patients suffering from abnormal visual spatial processing may perceive objects that are in line with their vertical center of their body to be shifted on one side.…”

“…The distance at which this break happens (or when the patient reports seeing double) is the NPC and is noted in cm (C). (Padula et al, 2017;Labreche et al, 2020) which may highlight the involvement of oculomotor and vestibulo-ocular systems. Patients suffering from abnormal visual spatial processing may perceive objects that are in line with their vertical center of their body to be shifted on one side.…”
