Post‐hatching developmental changes in the adrenal gland of the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica): Histological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic studies

Abstract: The adrenal glands are paired abdominal endocrine organs vital to the bird's health. The present research aimed to provide a comprehensive examination of the histological, ultrastructural, and immunohistochemical investigations of the adrenal gland in Japanese quail during the post hatching period. The current study was performed on 21 healthy Japanese quail chicks at different post hatching periods. Our results showed the adrenal gland is surrounded by a connective tissue capsule, which consists of dense coll… Show more

“…It is found in three cell compartments: the plasma membrane, the cytoplasm, and the nucleus (Orsulic et al, 1999). Its expression in the cortical and medullary cells in the current study could be attributed to the loss of demarcation between the cortex and medulla in adrenal of the birds (Abdel‐Maksoud et al, 2023). β‐catenin accumulation in the outer cortex could be involved in establishment of adrenal cortex zonation (Drelon et al, 2015).…”

“…In addition, the cells within the capsular zone showed a stronger positive reaction. The strong positive reaction of these cells within the capsular zone may be an indication that there was a high proportion of chromaffin stem cells in that region (Abdel‐Maksoud et al, 2023). Sox10, a member of SOX family of transcription factors (Schepers et al, 2002) serves as a nucleocytoplasmic shuttle protein and is essential for the development of the neural crest and the peripheral nervous system (Cheung et al, 2005).…”
