Post-Harvest Quality of Fresh Akabare Chili (Capsicum chinese) as Affected by Hydrocooling, Package Modification and Storage Temperature

Abstract: Akabare chilli (Capsicum chinese) is a high-value crop in the eastern hills of Nepal. Akabare growers faced the problem of its value decrement during transportation and marketing because of immediate post-harvest losses. This study was targeted for finding cheap post-harvest treatment to extend freshness and shelf life of fresh Akabare by applying post-harvest treatments like hydrocooling, refrigerated temperature storage, and perforation mediated plastic packaging. The chemical qualities (moisture, vitamin C … Show more

“…The schematic diagram of the work process is shown in Figure 6. Usually, peppers are harvested with the peduncle portion retained to maintain their freshness and improve their storage time [24]. In order to investigate the reasonableness of the above working scheme, it was necessary to determine whether the separation of the fruit stalk from the tree could be achieved by shaking the peppers during picking without destroying their integrity.…”

“…Some farmers (49.30%) also allowed inexperienced individuals to harvest chilies. Engaging inexperienced people in harvesting and handling could increase post-harvest losses (Maskey et al, 2021). Most farmers (92%) harvested chilies when it was still in the green stage, followed by looking at the size of chilies (69.30%).…”

“…The postharvest system includes activities from harvesting until it reaches consumers (Kiaya, 2014). Postharvest activities include harvesting crops, handling, storing, processing, packaging, transportation, and marketing the produce (Maskey et al, 2021). Post-harvest loss can occur due to changes in quality and the quantity of the crop after harvesting.…”

“…Generally, the packaging materials are manufactured from petroleum-based polymers, such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), and hence are not biodegradable. This means that they eventually have a high environmental impact due to their accumulation in the environment [6,7].…”
